Ethiopian Delegation Participates in the 80th United Nations General Assembly

The Ethiopian delegation, led by President Taye Atske Selassie, is participating in the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

President Taye, in his address to the High-Level General Debate of the 80th UN General Assembly, emphasized the urgent need for UN reform and renewed global cooperation to address development, peace, and security challenges.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, President Taye met UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who congratulated Ethiopia on the inauguration of the GERD, its successful hosting of a climate summit, and other achievements, and discussed regional and international issues of concern. He also held talks with Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, and with UNGA President Annalena Baerbock on global challenges, peace, multilateralism, and Ethiopia’s development and regional priorities.

Ethiopia’s commitment to energy reform was recognized during a ceremony admitting the country to the second cohort of Mission 300, an initiative to electrify Africa in the presence of President Taye. The recognition, which came during UNGA, underscored Ethiopia’s progress in transforming its energy sector.

At the high-level meeting on the Global Development Initiative (GDI), State Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Hadera Abera commended China’s efforts to align the initiative with UN goals. He highlighted the importance of financing and debt management based on solidarity and mutual respect, reaffirming Ethiopia’s strong support for the GDI.

Ambassador Hadera also attended the AU Peace and Security Council high-level meeting on “Re-energizing Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa” and the High-Level Pledging Conference for the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where he underscored Africa’s shared responsibility for peace and security, emphasized enabling the African Peace and Security Architecture, and reaffirmed Ethiopia’s unwavering support for Somalia’s stability.

Ethiopia’s broader engagement at UNGA included sideline meetings led by Ambassador Hadera with representatives from the United States, Cuba, Mozambique, Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates, the European Union, South Sudan, Philippines and the UN.

At the Africa CDC Committee of Heads of State and Government, Ethiopia reaffirmed its commitment to advancing health sovereignty through domestic resource mobilization and innovative financing.

Ethiopia also participated in the 4th BRICS Sherpas/Sous Sherpas Meeting, held alongside UNGA80 under India’s incoming chairmanship for 2026. Ambassador Minelik Alemu, Special Policy Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, underlined Ethiopia’s readiness to help build consensus on the Joint Media Statement and voiced support for India’s forthcoming leadership while commending Brazil’s stewardship.
