Ambassador Tewodros Girma: A Young Diplomat Shaping Ethiopian-Canadian Relations

Strengthening Ethiopia-Canada Relations with Diplomatic Excellence

With almost two decades of experience in diplomacy and international relations, Ambassador Tewodros Girma is a distinguished diplomat and one of the youngest ambassadors within Ethiopia’s diplomatic corps. Currently serving as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Canada, he plays a pivotal role in reinforcing bilateral ties, fostering mutual understanding, and further enhancing the long-standing and exceptional relationship between Ethiopia and Canada.

Ambassador Tewodros embarked on his diplomatic career in 2008 when he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia. Over the years, he has held a range of key positions, progressing from Diplomatic Attaché to Minister Counselor. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador, he served as an Advisor to the State Minister for Foreign Affairs. His extensive experience spans multiple strategic directorates, including Public Diplomacy, African Affairs, Economic and Business Affairs, European Affairs, and IGAD Affairs. Additionally, he has represented Ethiopia in diplomatic missions in Berlin and Dar es Salaam, where he served as Minister Counselor.

Throughout his career, Ambassador Tewodros has actively participated in high-level bilateral and multilateral engagements, contributing to Ethiopia’s diplomatic initiatives on the global stage. His participation includes:

  • Third AU-EU Summit (Tripoli, 2010)
  • Global Health Conference (Addis Ababa, 2011)
  • 20th African Union Summit (2013)
  • Third TANA High-Level Forum on Security in Africa (2014)
  • IGAD 24th Extraordinary Summit (2014)
  • Third International Conference on Financing for Development (2015)
  • Third India-Africa Summit Forum (New Delhi, 2015)
  • 52nd Munich Security Conference (2016)
  • Compact with Africa Initiative during Germany’s G20 Presidency (2017)

As Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Canada, Ambassador Tewodros is deeply committed to elevating diplomatic, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two nations. His mission extends beyond diplomacy—he is dedicated to empowering and uniting the Ethiopian diaspora in Canada, fostering a strong and engaged community that serves as a bridge between Ethiopia and Canada.
